By the time she turned 15, Houston had sung professionally as a backing vocalist with her mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 song Im Every Woman. In 1981, she worked as a fashion model and appeared on the Seventeen cover. She also performed the backing vocals for Lou Rawls and Jermaine. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney that included hits The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was her 1992 movie The Bodyguard (1992) that made her one of the most successful artists of all time. Even though the movie and actor's performance weren't highly praised, the soundtrack album with her version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was the top-selling single and album for several months. It sold over 44 million copies around the world. In the same year, she got married to former New Edition star Bobby Brown with whom she was the sole parent of their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, born in March 1993.
